My name is L Wallace, I am a 19 year old ceramic artist based in Mechanicsburg PA.

My goal to make colorful, sustainable, and unique ceramic designs while maintaing quality and function.

Inspirations

I take most of my inspiration from nature, and the ways in which people interact with it. As a result, much of my work contains plant themed imagery, and natural intuitive patters. I also take a lot of artistic interest in human psychology and stories, which often times leads to me weaving in manmade influences, or writing my own stories to go with them.

A core motivation of my art is the desire to challenge myself. Though I have a sometimes daunting well of ideas, I have always found myself drawn to the hardest looking projects on the list, and I love the tedious details.

How I got to ceramics

It is a bit of a cliche to say that I have wanted to be an artist since I was a little kid, but I do find it to be partially true. I’m not going to say I have always wanted to be a ceramicist, because that would be an overstatement, but I have had a vested interest in art since I was small. Every career ive ever had in interest in either fell under the creative umbrella, or had to do with some kind of outdoorsy science; geology, archeology, ecology. When I sat down to think about how I got here, I found that the medium I work with now hits all of those major interests. Its creative, relies on the use of my hands, and has to do with rocks and dirt… Even though it is not exactly what I imagined back then, I love the freedom ceramics has to offer, allowing me to do both two-dimentional and three-dimentional art, as well as more utilitarian pottery.

Before my sophemore year of high school, I had played with clay here and there in art class and a few short classes at a local pottery studio, but I didnt truly discover my love for the ceramic medium until I took Ceramics 1 in 10th grade, where I spent three years, four classes, and nearly all of my spare time in the ceramics classroom making sculptures.

The past two years, I have been putting most of my effort into completing commissions, polishing my functional pottery skills, and developing a recognizable, and sustainable style. I hope keep studying, and be able to make an acceptable living off of my art within the next couple years.
